What can Eastern medicine offer you?
There are a myriad of Eastern medical disciplines that one can choose to use either alone or in combination as a complement to Western medicine to help you to continue to address your kidney disease, or simply to maintain a healthy state.
Acupuncture
As I’ve mentioned, an Acupuncturist understands the kidney from its function. He or she will examine you based on Acupuncture philosophy and may ask questions such as your favorite color, taste, season, etc. These are efforts to identify whether the kidneys are the main culprits or whether other organ imbalances are affecting the kidneys. In Acupuncture, all organs work as a unit and an imbalance of one can affect the others. Because of this, a complete evaluation of you as a person is carried out. An important role that the kidneys play in Acupuncture is through their associated channel. The associated channel for the kidney in Acupuncture is the urinary bladder channel. The bladder channel runs from your foot all the way to your head and face. It covers most of the back of the body and is very useful in treating several conditions. Therefore, if the kidney is at the root of imbalance, the Acupuncturist may place needles along the channels pertaining to the kidney and urinary bladder, and not necessarily at the exact physical location of the kidney.
A claim by an Acupuncturist to treat a particular disease has no basis, except in the case of pain relief for musculoskeletal problems. This is because, fundamentally, Acupuncture does not treat diseases. It treats patients…the You Power in patients. Therefore, if your practitioner claims to treat a particular disease, it is time to change to a different practitioner.
While Acupuncture or any other Eastern medicines cannot claim to “cure” disease to meet the standards set by the Western medicine, they can be used to improve your general well-being and support Western medical therapies. This combination of treatment has been documented to work well. For example, Acupuncture has been shown to be effective in reducing post-operative pain and nausea in patients that undergo major surgeries—and does so without major side effects8.
A good friend of mine needed major abdominal surgery for cancer treatment. Without surgery, he was looking at less than six months of survival. His kidney function was abnormal, with elevated creatinine levels, which indicated dysfunction. When he was evaluated for surgery at one of the premier medical centers in the United States, and was declined because of his abnormal kidney function and advanced age, I had him undergo Acupuncture therapy. I recommended Acupuncture therapy not only for kidney improvement but also for improved general health. After three months of Acupuncture treatment, his kidney function normalized. The only intervention during that three-month period was Acupuncture. His primary care physician, a Western medical practitioner, was astonished at the results—he did not expect improvement in the kidney function of his 90-year-old patient.
The patient went back to the surgeons and was accepted for the abdominal surgery because of the improvement in his kidney function, despite his advanced age.
